Well-known for its independent shops, eateries and cafe culture, we thought we’d head to Monmouth and take you with us, sharing our top tips and recommendations along the way.

It’s a crisp and sunny Friday morning in January, we have a Friday free of plans, so where better than to pop to our local market town, for a little potter and a spot of brunch!

Monnow Gate and Bridge

Monmouth is often described as ‘historic’ for a reason, before even parking your car, upon approaching the small market town, you get to see the only remaining medieval fortified river bridge in Great Britain with its gate tower still standing in place! Pretty cool, huh? Originally built with a portcullis, it was once used for defence, but was later developed into a toll collection point, a jail and even a home! Now it remains standing guard over the River Monnow at the bottom of Monmouth’s high street, pedestrianised for all to enjoy.

Parking in Monmouth

There is free parking for up to an hour along the high street though these spaces are highly sought after, and you’re likely to want to stay longer than an hour! There are other car parks near Monnow Bridge for a small fee, we chose to park… Parking is free on Sundays.
