Our favourite cafe this month… SENSORY AND RYE, HEREFORD
If you’re looking for the perfect Saturday morning coffee hit, be sure to head to Sensory and Rye. Based in Hereford City Centre, in cool new premises, Sensory and Rye offers beautifully presented ‘Instagrammable’ dishes (which are delicious may I add) alongside speciality artisan coffee, soft drinks and beers.
Whether you’re looking for sweet or savoury, you won’t be disappointed at Sensory and Rye! Book online to save queuing at the door.
Open Tuesday through until Saturday, 9am – 3pm, serving breakfast, brunch and lunches.
Our favourite seasonal activity this month…. PICKING OR BUYING FLOWERS
Our pretty mini daffodils have bloomed ‘Narcissus Bridal Crown’ and we are so enjoying going out picking them for the barn again. There are a number of months in the year where a lack of flowers in the garden forces us to buy foliage to adorn the barn, previous guests may have enjoyed the bright red poinsettia plants we put in the barn in December for example. But. nothing makes us happier than pottering around the garden on the morning of changeover day, cutting some flowers and potting them into little vases ready to be placed around the cottages to welcome our next guests.
Our favourite pub this month…. THE TEMPLE BAR INN, EWYAS HAROLD
A Sunday well spent brings a week of content or so the saying goes…
Last Sunday we enjoyed a wonderful lunch at @thetemplebarinnewyasharold which is why it’s featuring as FAVOURITE PUB this month!
Situated in the centre of the village of Ewyas Harold, the Temple Bar Inn offers a warm welcome, delicious fresh, seasonal food, and a great selection of drinks, in a cosy setting.
The Sunday lunch, bread and butter pudding, and profiteroles were DELICIOUS! Highly recommended, this is definitely one to save and try for yourselves☺️
Our favourite walk this month…. GARWAY HILL
Our favourite walk this month is the wonderful: Garway Hill! ⛰
Covering 85 hectares of beautiful rugged landscape, and views to warm the heart, Garway Hill is the perfect place to relax and unwind!
To embark on this gently sloping roughly 4 mile circular loop, gradually ascend through green fields and admire the views across the valley. Follow one of the network of paths across the common to reach the peak.
The real magic is found at the 1200ft summit, where one can enjoy 360 degree views of Herefordshire, Monmouthshire and beyond.
Breathe in the scenery and feel your worries blow away with the winds☺️
Our favourite place this month…. LUDLOW
The pretty quaint market town of Ludlow is definitely one to add to the itinerary this spring. With an abundance of excellent restaurants and cafes and independent shops, it’s well worth a visit! Zig-zag up and down the historic streets in this traditional market town with beautiful architecture.
Be sure to check out the market in the town square for some great finds, and visit the castle just behind the square for a great day out with all the family, and for incredible views across the town.
Described as one of the finest historic towns in England, nestled in the centre of the marches, and with markets running most days, Ludlow is not one to miss if you’re in the surrounding area!
JANUARY 2022
Our favourite cafe this month… BEAN AND BREAD, ABERGAVENNY

Filled with lovely plants and cosy sofas, delicious brunch and strong coffee is served all-day everyday (9-5), and their tasty cruffins and cakes are not to be missed! 😋

Our favourite seasonal activity this month…. STARGAZING
Were you lucky enough to catch a glimpse of yesterday’s Wolf Moon… the first full moon of 2022? 🌙
It’s still shining bright tonight, so be sure to take a look🥰
The stars were just magical too, as they have been throughout January, hence why stargazing is featuring as our favourite seasonal thing to do this month.
The night sky is one of the joys of winter in Herefordshire, with the skies darker for longer at this time of year and our rural location boasting some of the country’s darkest night skies, it’s an ideal time to stare up at the heavens overhead.
In fact, the Brecon Beacons National Park is only the fifth destination in the world to be granted International Dark Sky Reserve status!
You can hopefully see the beauty of the skies overhead from these photos, although the iPhone camera doesn’t do it justice, so why not see for yourself from the comfort of the hot tub here at Hatterrall! 🛁

Our favourite pub this month…. THE CARPENTERS ARMS, WALTERSTONE
Our favourite pub this month… it’s cosy, it’s traditional, it’s welcoming, and the food is delicious! 🍽
The Carpenters Arms is a hidden gem, nestled in the small village of Walterstone, at the side of a quaint little country lane abutting the church yard. 🌳
This 300-year old pub has been in the same family for the last 100 years so you’re sure to receive a warm welcome.
Remaining as it always was, the pub offers a traditional, cosy setting and with a broad selection of ales on offer, along with delicious home cooked food, it’s the perfect place to stop off – whether it be for lunch or dinner, you won’t be disappointed! 🍺
Walterstone is roughly 3 miles from Clodock/Longtown, so if you’re feeling brave, why not enjoy a brisk walk to the pub across picturesque countryside, and a slow ramble back down country lanes with a full stomach in tow.
Open Mon, Weds, Fri and Sat (12pm-3pm and 6pm-10pm) and Sun (12pm-4pm).

Our favourite walk this month…. THE SKIRRID
Our favourite local walk this month, The Skirrid (seen from afar in the first photo), a National Trust site, is the last outcrop of the Black Mountains.
With 360 degree spectacular views, a walk to its summit is certainly rewarding!
Park in the National Trust car park at the bottom (charges apply) and meander up through the wood, climb the steps and ascend the ridge until you’re met with glorious views in every direction, looking across Herefordshire, the Malverns, the Brecon Beacons, the Usk Valley, Somerset, Gloucestershire and the Forest of Dean.
The full loop around the hill is roughly 4 miles long. For a post-walk thirst quencher, head to the nearby ‘Copper Kettle Tea Room’ or the ‘Skirrid Mountain Inn’, which is said to be the oldest pub in Wales.

Our favourite place this month…. CRICKHOWELL, WALES
For our final instalment of our This Month We’re Loving recommendations, we bring you, our favourite PLACE for January…
And it’s none other than the picturesque town of Crickhowell.
Lying south of the Black Mountains in the Usk Valley, this ancient town boasts a bakers, greengrocers, two butchers’, a homeware store, clothes shop, zero waste store, bookshop, multiple cafes and an antiques shop, amongst many others!
With ancient inns, independent shops, a medieval castle and the longest stone bridge in Wales, there really is something for everyone.
